Sick
04.25.09 (11:01 pm) [edit]
Do you think that it is right for your job to spy on you when you call in sick?
A Swiss insurance worker lost her job after surfing popular social network site Facebook
The woman said she could not work in front of a computer as she needed to lie in the dark but was then seen to be active on Facebook, which insurer Nationale Suisse said in a statement had destroyed its trust in the employee.
"This abuse of trust, rather than the activity on Facebook, led to the ending of the work contract," it said.
The unnamed woman said she had been surfing Facebook in bed on her iPhone and accused her employer of spying on her and other employees by sending a mysterious friend request which allows access to personal online activity.
Her job rejected the accusation of spying and said the employee's Facebook activity had been stumbled across by a colleague in November, before use of the social network site was blocked in the company.
Maybe she started feeling better and just wanted to check her page, you know how boring it can be when you are in bed sick.
Do you think she should have lost her job?

Yep...she deserves to be fired!!! She lied to them, so cannot be trusted at best!
Have the right to spy on you at home? they have that right!! A number of court cases has affirmed their right to do this...One was fired for smoking, when their ruls were no smoking!! he only smoked at home...but...he smoked court upheld the company...maybe they pay more!!

My friend answered this best on SC:
No way. What i do in the privacy of my home is not my boss's business. Period.
If i show up the next day, as i was supposed to do after my absence, and i resume working as usual...its not up to my boss investigating if i was really sick or not the day before.
This is just plain bs.
That's why companies give employees a determined number of days off: sick days, personal days or vacations.....whatever... they are employees privileges and no boss should ever question how they are used.
Hope the woman sue the company and win.

This is not a legal response from me but I think she should have been fired. She was stupid for not picking a good excuse. If she planned on using iPhone she should have just said that she was down with seasonal allergies. And if she was visiting health websites to research her eye condition or bank to pay an overdue bill or her office email to respond to important messages, that would have made sense but Facebook (no matter how addictive and fun, it is not an essential website)
But I do not approve of companies spying on employees. What's next? Someone will show up at your door to check if you are really sick?

Reply to: skumora, That would be a logical next step. I still don't think that they should have fired her for that.
